Popular Health Care Careers

The healthcare field is a great place to start your career. The jobs in this field are in high demand, plus they are usually very high-paid jobs. If you have any interest at all in the health care field, think about the careers below as an option for you.

  1. Doctor. Of course, being a medical doctor is the number one job on the list. However, if you are thinking of medical school, consider a specialty. Doctors that specialize in a specific field are often in high demand. For example, consider specializing in dermatology.
  2. Nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner functions much like a doctor, but with much less schooling. The Nurse practitioner can write prescriptions, diagnose, and often help the patient in many of the same ways as the doctor. As a patient, you are always under the care of a primary doctor when you visit a nurse practitioner, but you don’t always have to see the doctor.
  3. Registered nurse. A registered nurse is one of the most sought after jobs in the health care field. Nurses have to be certified and go through a lot of schooling, but the job is a lucrative one – as well as an emotionally fulfilling job. Registered nurses help others to heal and to get the help that they need to regain their health.

The healthcare field is a great place to start your career. There are plenty of well-paying jobs that are in high demand, even in a rough economy. Consider a career in the healthcare field for yourself.

Surgery Revealed to Cure Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a condition where the lymph nodes are blocked causing the area to swell. Lymph nodes are important because they drain fluid from tissues and allow cells from the immune system to travel throughout the body. It’s a common, serious complication that is caused by treatments for breast cancer. A new surgery, however, might be able to cure this serious problem.

This surgery was pioneered by Dr. Corinne Becker. Often during breast cancer treatments, lymph nodes have to be removed from a patient’s underarm causing the lymphedema, which causes the arm to be constantly swollen and to hurt. The surgery resolves this taking lymph nodes from the patient’s groin area and transplanting them into the underarm. The trick is to take enough but not too much to cause lymphedema in the groin where the nodes were harvested. This procedure is called autologous vascularized lymph node transfer.

Despite this procedure curing some patients and improving the conditions of others, the procedure is rarely performed in the United States. There are a couple reasons for this. One, doctors tend to avoid surgery where possible and two, there has been any clinical trials to help doctors understand the risks to this procedure and who are best suited to be given this procedure. It’s also needed for insurance agencies that don’t want to cover the costs of the procedure. At the moment, the surgery is only recommended to those who haven’t been helped by conventional treatments.

Still, despite the fact that this condition is considered “incurable,” according to Dr. Becker in a paper written in 2006, 90 percent of her patients’ condition improved and almost half were cured.

New Rules from FDA on Sunscreen

Sunscreen lotion

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the U.S. has released new regulations for how sunscreen is labeled. These new labeling regulations will be required by major manufacturers by next year while small manufacturers will have two years in order to become compliant.

New Regulations

Manufacturers of sunscreen have new regulations that have to be followed. In the past, if the sunscreen was made to block UVA rays as well as UVB rays, the packaging would state “broad spectrum.” Now, in order for manufacturers to state “broad spectrum” on the label, the SPF must reflect the amount of protection to both types of UV rays instead of just UVB rays.

Another rule is that sunscreens must have an SPF of 15 or higher in order to claim that they protect against sunburns and reduce the chances of developing skin cancer and early signs of aging. In fact, products with a protection of SPF 14 and lower will have to carry a warning stating that the product hasn’t been shown to protect against these things. Also under consideration is limiting manufacturers to labeling their product as being at most 50 SPF. Currently, research has shown that more than that doesn’t add any more protection.

Be Smart

When it comes to being in the sun, be smart about how you protect your skin. Try to use sunscreen between 30 and 50 SPF and reapply every two hours that you’re in the sun. Wear sunscreen even when it’s cloudy and avoid the midday sun when the rays are the most harmful. And remember, dry clothing protects your skin, but wet clothes don’t.

Graphics on Cigarette Cartons

Unlit filtered cigarettes

Image via Wikipedia

As early as 2012, cigarette cartons will now bear graphic images on the top half. These images bear reasons for not smoking including harming nonsmokers, harming children, causing birth defects in fetuses, causing lung cancer, and increasing chances of strokes. There were nine images chosen for this campaign. The most graphic is probably the picture of a man with a hole in his neck. The hope is that potential smokers will be deterred by the images and current smokers will be motivated to quit.

These images will also be required in advertisements for cigarettes, taking up 20 percent of the ad space. By September 2012, all cartons and ads will have these warnings.

The cigarette companies were not happy with this requirement and the four largest makers of cigarettes threatened to sue. The reasons for the suit including obscuring the company’s name on the cartons, infringement on freedom of speech, hurting business through these graphic images, and placing a stigma on their customers.

One reason for the legislation is that after the number of smokers had been declining over the last 40 years, it’s leveled off in the last 7 years at just under 20 percent. The government is trying to find a way to increase the decline — one in five people is just too much. The fact is that smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States and kills 443,000 Americans each year. It’s also estimated that 4,000 youths try smoking every day. It’s hoped that these images will decrease that number. It’s a lot easier to never start than it is to quit smoking.

Increase in Potentially Deadly Tick Bites

It used to be that Lyme disease was the main cause for concern when someone is bitten by a tick, especially in the Northeast where tick bites are more common. However, a new infection is becoming more and more common, and it’s not as easy to detect as Lyme disease.

It’s called babesiosis and it’s an infection that presents itself very similarly to malaria. It’s a parasite the lives in red blood cells and is spread by deer ticks. Symptoms include:

  • headache
  • fever
  • fatigue
  • chills
  • sweats
  • muscle aches

Because the symptoms mimic the flu, many don’t realize they even have this infection and there are many that don’t have any symptoms at all, but for those who have compromised immune systems, an infection can be deadly.

The real problem comes with blood transfusions. It’s estimated that 30 percent of those who receive infected blood through a blood transfusion died as a result. These are not good odds. But since so many do not realize they’ve been infected, it’s easy to pass on the infection without realizing it.

When it comes down to it, there needs to be a valid test that the blood can go through to test for babesiosis. In Rhode Island, where the parasite is most common, blood centers have begun using an experimental test to screen for the parasite. For those who receive the infection through a transfusion, it can take up to nine weeks before symptoms present themselves. For that reason, patients should be informed about the parasite and its symptoms. For those who suspect they have babesiosis, there is a blood test available to confirm the diagnosis.
